Fortress is seeking to add a talented Payroll Associate to the Human Resources team reporting to the Senior Vice President of Payroll.

The Fortress payroll team is responsible for processing approximately 80 US and foreign payrolls across multiple pay cycles and payroll platforms.  The team processes all salary, bonus, equity, and non-cash payments for approximately 850 employees worldwide.  

The primary responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and processing semi-monthly US payrolls using Workday
    • Processing new hires, terminations, overtime, special payments, leaves of absences, etc. 
    • Reviewing offer letters and termination agreements to ensure all information is correctly implemented in HR systems and payments are processed timely and accurately 
    • Ensuring all new hire tax and direct deposit information are provided and complete
    • Reviewing updates and changes to benefit and 401(k) deductions to ensure accuracy
    • Reviewing and ensuring accuracy of various required accumulative deductions, such as NY Paid Family Leave
    • Reconciling earnings variance (current vs. prior payroll) 
    • Calculating and coordinating funding for all payrolls 
    • Managing the annual summer intern payrolls
    • Coordinating and attending payroll approval meetings
  • Work closely with the HR Compensation team to prepare for and execute the annual bonus payroll
  • Work closely across the HR function and various corporate groups, including Benefits, Corporate Accounting, Financial, Planning & Analysis, and Tax:
    • Producing accounting reports and information needed to create journal entries 
    • Partnering with accounting department and responding to questions regarding payroll related issues 
    • Supporting various departments in relation to audit requests
    • Creating and providing monthly and ad-hoc reports for various departments 
  • Review and reply to unemployment claims; Work with HR Generalists in answering certain claims
  • Reconciling and coordinating payment of payroll related invoices 
  • Answering employee inquires and support current and former employees in Workday self-service (such as updating tax forms, changing direct deposits, and obtaining pay slips and tax documents)
  • Provide support and documentation for various audit requests

The successful candidate will possess the following required skills/qualities:

  • Minimum of three years of payroll experience with proficiency in payroll, payroll accounting and tax and benefit laws and regulations 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Human Resources/Business Administration a plus
  • Expertise in Workday is preferred
  • Proven ability to communicate, respond, and resolve issues as they arise among employees or vendors
  • Great attention to detail

  • Ability to achieve successful results in a fast paced dynamic work environment
